In the interview with Professor Gilbert, I found it interesting to learn that humans are essentially "prediction machines just walking around to predict the future and be happy." He explains that the present is just a small moment on the timeline, and the past cannot be changed so people care less about it, leaving the future as the only aspect truly worth caring about. This obsession with the future seems to be a uniquely human trait, as he suggests that other species do not exhibit the same level of future-oriented thinking. I was surprised to learn this because I assumed that other animals might have been capable of planning for the future in a similar way to humans. After watching the video, it makes that other species can appear to be plotting for the future, but are not necessarily thinking about it in the same depth or as far into the future as humans do. This helps me understand more about why we are so driven to understand and anticipate what lies ahead.
