Professor Loeb believes that theoretical results are more important than applied work because theory provides us with a deeper understanding of the world with which we can make advancements on several fronts. However, only engaging in theoretical work would be impractical and the immediate impact of application is necessary. I would ask Professor Loeb how should we balance the theoretical and applied aspects of research, especially in a world where time is of the essence.

Hey Anne, thanks for your response. I think your question would be an interesting one to hear Prof. Loeb's response too. Moreover, I wonder if the question could be expanded on by including something related to AI. For example, how can the "balance" you referred to be further tweaked/complicated with the increasing role of AI in scientific discovery AND analysis? Super interesting to think about!
