What do you, personally, think you will remember most about this interview a year from now?
I think that what I will remember most about the interview is Lord Martin Rees comparison of climate change-beneficial technology to the implantation of the iPhone in developing countries. Often when we look at development from a climate change perspective it is portrayed that an increase in the development of poorer countries will result in a greater degradation of the current environmental problems. However, Lord Martin Rees statement about how developing countries could leapfrog to better technologies for the climate, as they leapfrogged to the use of the iPhone, gives me hope.
How do you think any aspect of the interview will affect your own future, or society's future?
I think that the aspect of the interview that will affect my future and society’s future is the idea that there is a large gap between the way the world is and the way the world could be. I argue this because I think that there will always be a gap between the way the world is and the way it could be and thus it will be as ever constant in the future as it is now. I disagree with Lord Martin Rees's opinion that the gap between what the world could be and is is widening. Lord Martin Rees's view is based on the fact that we know more about the possibility of unknown unknown, with globalization and the internet we are no longer focusing on the possibilities in our region but also on the whole world. I argue that our perspective has changed not the number of possibilities we can utilize to face new challenges. With each new solution, we find a new problem arises. I hope the problems we face in the future, however, get better.
Hi Lily! Great job on this post! I love the optimism you brought in and the argument you raise against Rees’s claim! You’ve really touched on the improvements and what we could do better rather than leaving the gap to be wider. The thought of how we are indeed improving and finding solutions and trying to face the problems in the future is something that we really need in our society now especially!
