In Space
As someone who didn't know a lot about space, I thought the fact that we looked across a massive frequency range to look for extraterrestrial life was really interesting. This of course could lead to a larger amount of uncertainty, which was also discussed, which I also thought was interesting. I wonder how one can quantify this uncertainty - we have discussed the importance of thinking a lot about uncertainty when making predictions, but I think it is important to be able to quantify uncertainty in our thinking, so I would ask Jill Tarter how to quantify the uncertainty when we are searching for extraterrestrial life. I also thought her opinion that we will never be completely reliant on robot technology to explore space and search for extraterrestrial life was really interesting, because one would think that as technology evolves, the things we do in terms of exploring space ourselves would also decrease. I would ask Jill Tarter how she thinks the evolution of AI will change this. It also brings up interesting thoughts about how computation/AI/technology increases uncertainty, in my opinion, when exploring!

In Artificial Intelligence
Ben Shneiderman's AI Interview on PredictionX provided a comprehensive overview of his insights on the intersection of AI and human-centered design. His emphasis on designing systems that empower humans and prioritize their needs was particularly striking. Additionally, his advocacy for incorporating explainability, transparency, and interpretability into AI systems was noteworthy. These qualities can increase trust in AI and facilitate its adoption in various industries. The most surprising piece of information I learned from the interview was that Ben's early work on AI involved using machine learning algorithms to create visualizations that could help humans interpret and understand complex datasets. This application of AI for enhancing human understanding and decision-making was ahead of its time, and it highlights the importance of considering the human element in AI development. I found the segment on Artificial Intelligence as a Black Box very interesting, as it emphasized the work we have left to do in this space. I also thought the segment where he described ML as tools not partners was interesting, especially in today's GPT fueled climate - we should not rely on them completely to do our thinking for us. If I had conducted the interview, I would have asked Ben to share his thoughts on the potential ethical and social implications of AI. Specifically, how can we ensure that AI is developed and used in a way that aligns with human values and societal needs? This question is pertinent given the increasing role of AI in shaping various aspects of human life. It is important to consider the potential consequences of AI and how we can mitigate its negative impacts while maximizing its benefits. I would also have asked him for his opinions on how ChatGPT and the advancements of generative AI have shifted his perspectives on the relationships between AI and humans.
