The most memorable bit of information I learned from Jill tarter’s interview was about the post-detection protocol that has been made for when we potentially make first contact with extraterrestrial life. I thought it is important that the first course of action is to be completely sure that we have made contact, as there have been some false positives in the past. It is reassuring that the protocol is to tell the world and the rest of the public, but I do not have full confidence that that would actually happen and that it would become a deeply political issue. I think about the movie Arrival, where originally the entire world works together, but then dissolves into chaos and silence between nations when countries discover they might have an edge and could be granted power over other countries through receiving alien technology and weapons. I think communication with extraterrestrial life is unfortunately a political issue that certain countries will want to have control of and it will be tough to negotiate who makes contact.
