The conversation regarding determinism and free will was super interesting to me. He relies a lot on the concept of life paths and learned behavior. One example that Agustin Rayo brought up that were interesting to me is the “Alyssa in 10 years” scenario. He said that it is not feasibly possible to know exactly where Alyssa will be, but it is also possible to project possible paths based on the life that she is currently leading. Another example that Dr. Rayo gave was the movie theater example. He stated that although someone’s routine may be going to the theater on a Friday, therefore making it easy to predict, they are also using their free will in that moment. He says that “It’s not a matter of escaping determinism,” but rather realizing how much determinism plays into our routines.
I definitely would have asked the question of “If”.. “Then” statements. For example, I would like to explore possible predictions made under the circumstance of a skew in a schedule. If someone does someone thats usually in their routine but it falls out of whack, what would they do next?
This really made me think of the movie Everything, Everywhere, All at Once, which focuses a lot on life paths. I would definitely recommend!
