I chose this video because the combination of the topics of health and earthquake predictions seemed strange but interesting, since they are rather different. It ended up being very informative about the process that goes into predicting when earthquakes might happen, as well goals mobile health has. When watching the video, I took a bit more interest in the earthquake component. What I found most surprising, and what viewers might also find surprising, is that it is actually quite difficult to predict when major earthquakes are going to happen. Seismologists, individuals who study earthquakes, do not work in predicting earthquakes but rather study the aftermath. What interviewee Brendan Meade, however, is working on is knowing when major earthquakes, and regular earthquakes for that matter, will happen before they actually occur. There are many systems in development to be able to study the exact movements and shifts in tectonic plates all around the globe, which will ultimately help with making earthquake predictions. Ironically enough, Brendan says that it’s actually a shame there haven’t been more major earthquakes because it means there isn’t much research on them or a lot of data to refer to. It will be amazing the day that these technologies are perfected as much as possible, since they will be able to help with not necessarily earthquake prevention (as that’s not possible), but preparing for the aftermath.
