In his 2018 interview, Shneiderman predicted that AI would mimic and support human functions rather than replace them outright, comparing AI to tools like cars or music players that enhance, not substitute, human abilities. However, with the rise of generative AI like ChatGPT, this view seems outdated. Today’s AI doesn’t just assist; it often performs tasks once considered uniquely human (writing, coding, designing, and even logical reasoning) at a level that threatens to displace jobs, not merely augment them. While Shneiderman’s emphasis on human-centered design remains valuable, his belief that AI would stay strictly in a supportive role no longer aligns with current realities, and especially in the future looks to be totally disproven.
