I would have loved to know if he has pushed for a similar course to "ignorance" in any other Universities? It seems like a really interesting class and I think it might be cool if it was accessible in more places.

I thought that the whole idea behind the class at the start was really interesting, especially because of his description of how scientists actually interact. The idea that they just go to a bar (or wherever) and discuss what they don't know. Just thought it humanized scientists, and at the same time is a great idea for a class.

I found it really interesting that Meade said we should be preparing to respond to earthquakes instead of preparing for them. To me, that was really counterintuitive, but on further thought, it started to make sense. The time periods they give for their predictions are very very large, so you cannot, for instance, evacuate a city for forty years. However, keeping more supplies around a city for if and when an earthquake does come is very doable.

Being a CS major, I would have loved to have heard more about the technical details of the deep learning that Meade was doing to predict earthquakes. There was a discussion of how little data there is, and I know that's always a very difficult issue to overcome. Furthermore, what inputs and outputs one should use are very non-obvious.

This entire interview was fascinating, but I particularly liked the stories about her thinking that she might have found something. I liked it partially because I thought it was interesting to think about how it must have felt to think you might have, as well as what it must have felt like to realize you didn't. I also really liked in specific the story about them going to sleep before telling their colleagues in California that it was nothing. https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:34dd3b2c-3aec-460a-817f-da4af2ed1577/items/lx-pb:34dd3b2c-3aec-460a-817f-da4af2ed1577:lx_simulation:e9099212?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction

This isn't really a question that could've been asked at the time of this interview, but there was recently an experiment done that suggests there very well might be a fifth fundamental force that we were previously unaware of. As part of the article I read, it said that it might contain in it an explanation for the phenomena we attribute to the black box that is dark energy. I would have loved to follow up the dark energy discovery at the start of an interview with how this new possible revelation changes our world view, as well as how we should think about the chances that it is actually true that this is a fifth force. https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:34dd3b2c-3aec-460a-817f-da4af2ed1577/items/lx-pb:34dd3b2c-3aec-460a-817f-da4af2ed1577:lx_simulation:1a066234?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction

I found it really interesting when David Labinson started talking about Occam's Razor. Specifically, the idea that machine learning is a departure from Occam's Razor. Honestly, I've always thought of simple models as a necessary requirement, but at the same time I have understood machine learning, yet I've never put it together that it is an almost unique exception. So I thought that was a very neat observation. https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:b5121779-9f49-49db-93d9-80d5d67dadb3/items/lx-pb:b5121779-9f49-49db-93d9-80d5d67dadb3:lx_simulation:f10b9110?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction

I'm always very interested in research on happiness, for reasons I think are obvious. I would have loved for there to have been more questions from Prof Goodman asking about if he had specific advice for how we could lead happier lives. Something along the lines of "With your years of experience, do you have one or two changes you've made to your life that have made you substantially happier?" https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:53ffe9d1-bc3b-4730-abb3-d95f5ab5f954/items/lx-pb:53ffe9d1-bc3b-4730-abb3-d95f5ab5f954:lx_simulation:5e3f229f?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction

I would have wanted to know a little bit more about uncertainty. Professor Goodman did ask a couple of times about it, for CRISPR and in general for genes, but I specifically wanted to know more about how they quantified uncertainty. The answer we got was more along the lines of "uncertainty exists and we do try to quantify and think of it." So maybe a follow-up to say: "Do you have any specific examples of how you quantify uncertainty for genetics? https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:0b417a9e-6227-44a8-a887-dbfdf44e37e3/items/lx-pb:0b417a9e-6227-44a8-a887-dbfdf44e37e3:lx_simulation:f6d09171?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction

I thought it was super interesting that almost a third of people have dormant tuberculosis. I think of it is kind of a distant disease that doesn't affect my life, or the life of my loved ones. But it's not just the dormant amount; it's also the fact that ten percent of those people get bad tuberculosis. It just goes to show that actual data can really make you look at phenomena differently and as more impactful. https://www.labxchange.org/library/pathway/lx-pathway:0b417a9e-6227-44a8-a887-dbfdf44e37e3/items/lx-pb:0b417a9e-6227-44a8-a887-dbfdf44e37e3:lx_simulation:7f50189c?source=%2Flibrary%2Fclusters%2Flx-cluster%3AModernPrediction
