The most surprising/interesting thing that I learned from the interview with Dan Gilbert is that it is easier to predict what will happen in the future, and more difficult to answer the question of how you will feel about future events. This helped me think in a big picture way about how I view my own future-- it is possible that I will be happier as a result of an outcome that I had dreaded than an outcome that I had hoped for, so I should be more open to various outcomes. This idea also has societal implications when it comes to technology, AI and our ever-improving modern predictive systems. The idea behind most of these systems is to better understand the future in order to change or improve the world. However, if humans don't actually know what would really be best for themselves or society, even if our AI is 100% accurate, we will not necessarily be able to create positive impact in the way that we envision.
